MEET ARMY VETERAN AND PVA MEMBER ANN

The force of nature known as Ann served in the U.S. Army for fourteen years. She was a reservist in a Civil Affairs Unit that served all over the world during emergencies and war situations.

While on active duty, she fell numerous times, injuring her back and knees. She now relies on a cane, a walker, or a scooter to get around. But that hasn’t slowed her down from being actively involved in her community and with PVA.

After her service, Ann worked for the VA and had just retired when she found a job working with PVA in the Medical Services department. She is a registered nurse, and brought her expertise in neurology and spinal cord issues to PVA for eleven years, until her injuries forced her to resign. She then realized that her injuries qualified her to be a member of PVA. She has been active ever since, most notably with the Colonial Chapter.

Ann is a champion for all of PVA’s advocacy efforts and the organization's work in the medical field. She is also enormously grateful for PVA’s help when it comes to her earned benefits – because if it hadn’t been for PVA, she never would have known she was service-connected for her disability.

THE IMPACT OF YOUR GENEROSITY: PVA'S ANNUAL REPORT

With the help of generous supporters like you, our work continues in earnest to ensure that the needs of our members, Veterans, their families and caregivers are met.

PVA ARCHITECTS AT THE FOREFRONT OF INCLUSIVE DESIGN

In early November, PVA Architects attended an accessible home builders’ conference in San Antonio, TX. The Summit included insightful presentations and panel discussions, with notable topics on smart home technology, bariatric accessibility solutions, home access project funding options, and a web-based home assessment tool. Most gratifying was connecting and sharing information with others who are committed to a barrier-free world.

PVA is the only Veteran Service Organization (VSO) with on-staff architects that provide design assistance to paralyzed and disabled Veterans.

PVA'S ADVOCACY EFFORTS YIELD STRONG RESULTS

November marked the end of the government shutdown and gave us time to reflect on the year. As we move into December, here is a highlight of all the great work our advocates have done for PVA:

  • This year, we gained 3,084 new advocates and an amazing 4,051 advocacy actions were accomplished.
  • We started a petition for the VA’s spinal cord injuries and disorders system of care with an astounding 3,669 signatures.
  • 382 letters were sent to Congress voicing the needs of our members.
We cannot wait to see all of the accomplishments our members and advocates will make next year.

PVA members rally behind wheelchair-bound child who was harassed at bus stopLocal 21 News

Members of PVA’s Central Florida, Colonial, and Keystone Chapters came together to support a young wheelchair user named Sirus after his family reported daily harassment at his school bus stop.

Their response—which included showing up for him, bringing holiday presents, welcoming him as an honorary member, and celebrating with him at the Colonial Chapter holiday party—is a powerful reminder of what love, protection, and community looks like.
